Mechanical Design Engineering at Tesla
I completed my third internship/co-op at Tesla with the vehicle structural design team (Semi Truck), ~3 months

Systems I owned:
-
Rear compartment roof subassembly, ~half of body sides, other structural brackets
-
15 unique parts total

What I worked on:
-
Resolving stress concentrators and fatigue concerns in stamped aluminum
-
Design for manufacturing readiness (stampings: springback, thinning, etc.)
-
Design for assembly readiness (weld gun access, datums, adhesive concerns, weld reduction, clearances, etc.)
-
Explore mass down and part reduction opportunities
-
Collaborated with vendors and internal manufacturing, stamping, electrical harness, & dimensional teams
Result:
-
Ensured all parts met static and dynamic load requirements
-
Saved $2M in CapX and OpX by eliminating stamping dies and fasteners (extra work, was not asked to do so)
-
Released 40 2D GD&T drawings to vendors for production
